Using story to connect YOU to the Master Storyteller

twenty-seven years

Twenty-Seven Years (i.e. WHOA!)

That's how long it's been since our wedding day.  Twenty-seven years. Our "wedding day" is not to be confused with our "marriage" day.  We got married in Las Vegas on November 25, 1988.  But, three months later, on February 18, 1989, we still had our wedding. I was just talking with my favorite Continue Reading

Character Interview: Kaye

I thought it might be nice to check in with Kaye--see how she's doing, and find out if she has had a "freak out" thing this year or not. I mean, she had one before, and it meant a whole life overhaul, right? Chautona:  Kaye?  You here? Kaye:  Yeah... hang on!  Purrlock has my phone.... CAT!  Continue Reading

Just What Is/Are Deceptive Appearances about Anyway?

Just What Is/Are Deceptive Appearances about Anyway?

Did you know Deceptive Appearances was the original title for Justified Means? Yep!  I really loved the title, but as the story developed, so did the underlying struggle of whether or not the end ever justifies the means.  Is committing one crime to prevent a worse one ever acceptable? Can Continue Reading

give author character

If You Give an Author a Character…

If you give an author a character, She's going to want a story, When you suggest that she write the story, She'll probably work to make it amazing. When she's finished, she'll ask you read it. Then she'll ask for a pen so she can make "corrections and improvements." With great reluctance, Continue Reading

Wy the Super Bowl is officially evil

Why the Super Bowl Is Officially Evil

My husband has this thing about soccer.  He says, "It's the 'sport of the beast'." Okay, under certain eschatological positions, he may have a point.  After all, it is a "one-world" sport, so to say.  Whereas, American "football" is pretty much ours.  I don't know if anyone else in the world does it Continue Reading

Murphy’s Mystery Law (and 20K reasons I’ll prevail)

Let me set the scene.  Denny's.  Eleven o'clock at night.  I had to wait for my "usual" booth--table 14.  It's the only table in the restaurant with an outlet right at the base of the bench seat.  My spot. It happens almost every night these days. I walk in, they point to "my table" and tell me Continue Reading

3 Things I Love about Carlie (and an interview)

When I first conceived the idea of Corner Booth, that's all I had.  A restaurant, a corner booth, and a guy who works there every Wednesday.  Originally, Dean was an accountant with a firm in town.  Carlie showed up, plopped herself into the booth, and voila! Everything changed about three thousand Continue Reading

Jack inspiration

What Happens When a Song Inspires a Story

Some have asked the"song-spiration" for the title of the series Ballads from the Hearth.  I chose that series title not because it has a "lovely" sound but because it so perfectly describes what comes to mind when I think of these ballad-inspired novels. My father sang these--often sitting on Continue Reading

Devotionals Are the Pits

I've shared pictures of my personal devotional journal for some time now, but I'm sure over the past few months, some have noticed a decided absence in posts.  There's a reason. They became incredibly personal. Part of it is pride, I'm sure, but a lot of it is just that not everything should be Continue Reading

Giddy Much?

So last night I was at Denny's, working on the notes so I could start Ante Up! today, when I typed out the ideas for the last scene. Even as I typed, I found myself cheering and laughing inside--almost shaking with excitement.  then I heard me say this:  (please excuse the "road noise". I was Continue Reading

Sister Fix: or how to complicate life

First Annual Sister Fix Trip! Well, it's been one of those weeks. I left Ridgecrest early EARLY Wednesday morning and boarded a plane for Dallas.  My sister (you know, the one I hadn't sen in 20 years before we met up in July) met me there and drove me to my birth town--Duncan, Oklahoma.  There we Continue Reading

Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know y Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know yourself the least? We humans are weird that way. Sometimes I think the Lord allows us to be blind to parts of ourselves for a time so as not to drive us too crazy too quickly. Or something.
Characters most like me are hard because they're so very convicting to write AND... because I don't usually know it's me until that conviction its. I tend to have an idealized picture of who I am until reality strips away those rosy glasses and leaves me with crystal-clear vision. Blech.
Second to me... I'd say nasty people. They give me such an ick feeling. Sure, it's cathartic... but it's so hard because I want to redeem everyone, and that's just unrealistic and frankly, arrogant. So... there you have it.
If you have a question you want me to answer, leave it in the comments OR... zip me an email at chautona@chautona.com. I'll try to work them in (and will probably combine those that are really similar.

Clearly, he wasn't talking about me, considering the whole patience being a virtue thing.
