Inspiration at a Hair Salon? Is No Place Safe?

Note: links are likely affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Inspiration: It started with a joke about how I couldn't afford to die.  I'd be 132 years old just sitting at a typewriter--a skeleton--and working feverishly (do bones get fevered?) to Continue Reading

Exploring Praise & Appreciation

Strange how ineloquent I am when I don't know what I think or how to think.  I debated sharing this one.  I don't share them all.  Some are too personal.  This... this was on the line.  But, hey.  I never claimed to be a poet.  And I have no idea if calling it a psalm is inappropriate.  Denotation Continue Reading

Hey, Jude! (Or Lessons in the “Lesser Epistle”)

Confession.  I tend to spend a lot of my Bible study time in the Gospels, Paul's epistles, and James.  Old Testament favorites are Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, and then snippets from a few others.  I used to say I didn't have favorite book or verse of the Bible, but clearly I do.  I mean, I'm naturally Continue Reading

Lessons from the Hotel Room

Did a refresher on Philemon while I was holed up in a hotel in town (protecting my asthmatic lungs from the smoke in the air).  I love how you can see things in new light after reading it for the hundredth time or more! Continue Reading

Tools for Writing Effectiveness *snicker*: Part One

This could be subtitled "Or tools I use to trick myself into being productive." People often ask how I "get so much done."  Now, a lot of times they're also asking about housework (hint: I subscribe to the "lived in" school of housekeeping),  homeschooling (toss the books at 'em and tell them if Continue Reading

Hush!

It's always going to be about me controlling my tongue.  Learning to be quiet.  I blame my surgeon. When I was 18 months old, I had surgery to correct my cleft palate.  That surgery left me with an INCREDIBLY nasal voice--almost incomprehensible.  My sister even beat up a girl who dared to mock Continue Reading

Lessons on the Airplane

One of the things that many people requested on the reader survey was a devotional.  I thought about it and at first, I was certain that it wouldn't work.  I don't really have time to add something else to my plate.  But then I was up in North Carolina at my writer's retreat.  For those who didn't Continue Reading

A Day in My Life: Friday

Ooooh boy.  Ever have a day when you spin your wheels... indefinitely?  Then, miraculously (because God is Who He is), at the end of the day, all that spinning managed to get the work done? Yeah--one of those  Woke up late, forgot to eat breakfast, and Lorna (#7 daughter) came home from Continue Reading

A Day in My Life: Thursday

Well, today went pretty much as planned.  Those are rare, no?  Well, they are in my life.  Of course, it helped that I didn't have a busy day planned.  My goals for the day were as follows: Get scrip cards (check!) Finish gifts for retreat ladies. (check!) Plan menu for while I'm Continue Reading

A Day in My Life: Wednesday

Sorry... this is a bit late.  Last night at about midnight, I lost Internet access.  UGH.  So, I found myself just working and not worrying about it.  The theme for the week continues, no? Okay, so the obvious.  Got up, got dressed, ate, made the bed--all that jazz.  Then I started editing--made Continue Reading

Reposted from @catheswanson Charlea Evans thought Reposted from @catheswanson Charlea Evans thought she had finally put her unconventional past behind her.

Now a widow with a college-age daughter and a promising new career within reach, she's worked hard to build a respectable life far removed from Serenity Hill—the quirky former commune where her free-spirited mother still lives. But when a devastating house fire destroys her home and everything she owns, Charlea finds herself with nowhere else to turn.

Reluctantly, she returns to the farm she thought she'd escaped forever, trading independence for her childhood bedroom, milking goats, tending chickens, and counting the days until she can afford a place of her own. Then an accident lands her mother in the hospital, leaving Charlea responsible for managing the property and overseeing an ambitious new venture.
Her mother and daughter have plans of their own. Big plans. Plans to transform Serenity Hill into a seasonal market and destination for workshops, events, and community gatherings. Helping bring the vision to life is Drew Wallace—the man who stole her heart on a single unforgettable date fifteen years ago.

As she works to keep the project moving forward, Charlea finds herself confronting old hurts, long-held assumptions, and the family history she's spent years trying to leave behind. With old dreams awakening and new possibilities taking root, she begins to wonder if Serenity Hill holds the answers she's been searching for. She must decide whether she's willing to risk her heart again—and whether the future she carefully planned can compete with the one God may have been preparing for her all along.

Coming home is the last thing Charlea wants—but it may be the beginning of everything she's been searching for.

Something New is the first book in the Serenity Hill series.
