Lessons on the Armor of God: A Devotional

by Chautona Havig · 6 Comments

So the other night, Luke was studying the Word, trying to see how he, as a husband, needed to “live in an understanding way” with a miserable, pregnant wife.  But things took an unexpected turn, and this happened.  So what does the armor of God have to do with being a good husband?  Well…

I’m still astounded about little things I see in Scriptures that I’ve studied over and over throughout my life.  I keep thinking, “What’s going to happen next?”  And, considering my next passages will be on being at rest before the Lord, I’m getting a bit nervous.  I keep thinking of the verses like, “Be still and know…” and “…fight for you. You only need KEEP SILENT.”  AAAK!

If you want to hear the song that kept playing in my mind as I read these and pondered, HERE it is.

You know, every time I hear that song, I think of Mojave, California, 1987.  My copy of that “album” arrived via cassette.  While other eighties kids were listening to Bon Jovi and Cyndi Lauper, I was listening to Glenn Miller, The Browns (the old ones, not the new ones), and Acapella.  I loved their harmony and couldn’t understand why they drove my father nuts.  To me, they were as amazing as any barbershop quartet–simply because they harmonized so beautifully.  So, I’d walk out in the desert with my… yep, you guessed it, knock-off Walkman, and I’d sing with them at the top of my lungs.  Our beloved dog, Boozer, never minded at all.

Note:  The last devotional had an error.  Somehow, I didn’t put the other line in II… so my II Corinthians came out as I Corinthians.  It’s corrected now, but um… yeah.  If you wondered what version I was using, it wasn’t some bizarre paraphrase… just a mixed up gal who got distracted while writing down the reference.

Chautona, all I can say is WOW (and this isn’t even about Willow, hehe). Thank you for sharing your journal. I often struggle with comprehension so you writing out your thoughts about Bible verses is so helpful for me. The depth of scripture continues to astound me. Our God is so gracious.

Keep up the great writing work. I am soo looking forward to reading Ante Up!! You see, I am a homeschool mom of 9 and can so relate to Aggie. I love Luke’s character and what comes out of his mouth is always amazing!!!

Well, I hope I make it very clear that I am just going on what I see. I TOTALLY recognize that I could be completely wrong, but I’m trying to take the whole thing, in context, and explore what the Lord could be saying. People who understand Roman/Green/First Century Judaic society would probably argue points with me, but I think that even then, if the way I look at it points me back to Jesus, I think that works just fine until the Lord sees fit to show me where I’m wrong. 😀

Ohhhhh…I loved Acapella too!!!! Such awesome harmony! It was one of the cassette tapes my then-boyfriend and I swapped back and forth. And my then-boyfriend is now my husband. We shared more than just good taste in music!

    Thanks for the flashback!

I love the song. Thanks for sharing it. Christian Armour in Eph 6 is one of my favorite passages. I did some lessons on it for my grandchildren and was amazed to discover they did not know the song: Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus. Now they are all active in their church – but sing mostly the “new” songs. 🙁 AUGH! Granma likes the new songs but the old ones have such value too! Since they live too far away for me to be with them much, I don’t get to share the old songs often.
I am interested in seeing how you connect this to Luke’s study of being a good husband. Because when I was studying this I suddenly noticed that “Finally, be strong in the Lord” – and put on the armor came RIGHT AFTER the instructions on how to get along in the family (and slaves = workplace?) oooh, we need to be protected and watch for the fiery darts even (especially?!!) in our family and other Daily RELATIONSHIPS!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Christian armour. Wickedness in high places is very obvious in our culture today. We too need to speak boldly.

That’s exactly what prompted the study. That one word, “Finally.” You can’t help but wonder if they’re connected.

I love hearing about authors’ research, but actually getting to see Grace Livingston Hill’s WRITING ROOM? WHAT?

The Lost Story of Via Belle by Melanie Dobson

Searching for a story to adapt for film, an aspiring screenwriter becomes captivated by a bestselling classic novel and the mysterious disappearance of the woman who wrote it.

1940. Via Belle’s sweet romance novels made readers believe in happily ever after. But Via’s reality was much more complicated. While her first husband was alive, her creativity thrived in a beautiful stone estate situated above a pristine lake and moonflower garden. After his tragic death and a whirlwind second marriage shrouded in secrets, Via vanished from public life, leaving behind a shadow of scandal . . . and her final story.

2006. Screenwriter Harper Rayne is desperate for a breakthrough, if only she can find the right story to tell. But when she digs into the life of her late mother’s favorite novelist, she never expects it to become personal. Drawn to the quaint Pennsylvania town where both her mother and Via once lived, Harper discovers more than a mystery to solve—she finds echoes of her own longing for love, healing, and home. As long-buried secrets come to light, Harper must decide if she’ll protect the past or rewrite this particular ending.

Described as a “powerhouse in dual-timeline Christian fiction” (Library Journal), Melanie Dobson delivers another rich, atmospheric novel about the legacy of sacrificial love and the redemptive power of truth.

  • Standalone dual-timeline historical mystery filled with drama, faith, and intrigue
  • Clean, suspenseful historical fiction, perfect for fans of Susan Meissner, Lisa Wingate, or Patti Callahan Henry
  • Includes discussion questions for book groups

You can learn more about Melanie Dobson on her WEBSITE. Also follow her on GoodReads and BookBub.
