I Loved This New Release the Minute I Saw It

The Bride of Blackfriars Lane picks up where the last one left off but, whoooeee! It offers a wild ride in new directions. Don't miss it! via @chautonahavig

We all have them–those authors who are insta-buy authors. A book goes up for preorder and bam!  SOLD!  Michelle Griep became one of those with the first book of hers that I read. If I recall correctly, I gave that book stars in dog years just so I could do more than five.

So is it any wonder that when this book came along, I instantly gave it five stars in my mind?

I Loved This New Release the Minute I Saw It

Sometimes, you don’t know where to begin with a book. This is one of those books. Kit and Jackson are at it again, but this time with what I can only call a “cold case” (or two?) in Victorian London. As usual, Jackson issues orders that Kit doesn’t follow, and the chaos that ensues (quite literally) will keep you on your toes from the first page through the last.

No, the characters aren’t perfect. Yes, you’ll want to bash heads in. And isn’t that what good books do?  Make you FEEL things?

I wish I had time to share more, but since I don’t, I’ll just say: If you haven’t read the first book, get it. Read it.  Then read this. Then start praying the publisher demands a third book, because if this is them before they’re married, I’m dying to see what they get up to afterward!

Recommended for lovers of Miss Scarlet and the Duke. It has all the banter and drama but with rich faith elements to make it a far superior read. That said, I’d love to see both books made into a movie/series. Anyone in Hollywood need good material? Thankful for the review copy.

About the Book

Book: The Bride of Blackfriars Lane

Author: Michelle Griep

Genre: Christian/Romance/Historical

Release date: September 2022

Detective Jackson Forge can hardly wait to marry the street-sly swindler who’s turned his life upside down.

Kit Turner is equally excited to wed the handsome detective, and what better way to show her love than providing him with a gift any man of the law would love?

She determines to bring to justice the men who years ago maimed his brother—despite Jackson’s warning to leave the past in the past. As she digs into the mystery of what happened, she unwittingly tumbles into her own history and endangers her future happiness with Jackson.

About the Author

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She is the Christy Award-winning author of historical romances: A Tale of Two Hearts, The Captured Bride, The Innkeeper’s Daughter, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor, The Captive Heart, Brentwood’s Ward, A Heart Deceived, and Gallimore, but also leaped the historical fence into the realm of contemporary with the zany romantic mystery Out of the Frying Pan. If you’d like to keep up with her escapades, find her at www.michellegriep.com or stalk her on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

And guess what? She loves to hear from readers! Feel free to drop her a note at [email protected].

A Visit to Borough Market

Whenever I skip across the pond, I make it a point to stop at the Borough Market for some great meals. This area was—and is—a popular place to shop and an absolute must-see for food lovers. From grocers, fishmongers, cheese sellers, and butchers to all kinds of ethnic eats, it’s hard not to want to sample everything. My personal favorite are the buddha bowls.

Believe it or not, Borough market has been in operation for the past thousand years. Yes, you read that correctly. It actually began as a bridge, constructed in 990. But let’s fast forward to the Victorian era, shall we?

In the nineteenth century, a railway viaduct was constructed through the middle of the market, which brought in more people—but also brought in more noise, soot, disruption, and crime. In such a hotbed of activity, it’s easy to imagine cutpurses and pickpockets of all sorts.

And that’s the perfect scene for a certain con artist turned investigator to meet with an informant. In The Bride of Blackfriars Lane, Kit Turner is up to her old shenanigans, much to Jackson’s chagrin. You can visit Borough Market along with her in this wild ride through Victorian London. It’s just one of the many stops in a city that never gets old.

Spoiler alert: This series is definitely on my FAVORITE series this year list. You don’t want to miss it!

The Escape Game by Gina Holder

Twenty years ago, the world’s leading enigmatologist disappeared, leaving behind a cipher no one could solve… not without his journal. Puzzle shop owner Demi Kayne has spent twenty years hoping her father would return home. When she discovers his hidden journal tucked inside the walls of her family home, she finally uncovers the clue she’s been waiting for—but it leads somewhere far more dangerous than she imagined. Liam Shepherd, a missionary and escape-room enthusiast, is searching for answers of his own. His sister has vanished without a trace, and the trail of clues leads him straight to Demi—and the secrets hidden in her father’s journal. Their search brings them to the eerie Ives Mansion, where its brilliant and reclusive owner has designed a deadly challenge. Once inside, Demi and Liam realize they’re no longer guests. They’re players. Trapped inside a twisted real-life mystery game based on a stolen puzzle design, they must solve a series of lethal riddles before time runs out. Each puzzle brings them closer to the truth about Demi’s missing father and Liam’s sister—but also closer to a killer who has spent years perfecting a game no one survives. With the clock ticking and lives hanging in the balance, Demi and Liam must confront their fears, their pasts, and the faith that may be their only hope of escape. In this gripping Christian suspense novel, every clue matters—and every mistake could be fatal. Can Demi and Liam solve the final puzzle before the game ends…or will the escape room become their tomb? Perfect for fans of Lynette Eason, Dani Pettrey, and Irene Hannon who enjoy puzzle-driven Christian suspense filled with danger, secrets, and faith under fire.

Characters most like me are hard because they're so very convicting to write AND... because I don't usually know it's me until that conviction its. I tend to have an idealized picture of who I am until reality strips away those rosy glasses and leaves me with crystal-clear vision. Blech.
Second to me... I'd say nasty people. They give me such an ick feeling. Sure, it's cathartic... but it's so hard because I want to redeem everyone, and that's just unrealistic and frankly, arrogant. So... there you have it.
