Using story to connect YOU to the Master Storyteller

Whose Name Inspired an Exciting New Character?

by Chautona Havig · 3 Comments

I arrive home from a night of writing and praying at the Lighthouse.  Kicked back in the recliner, I pop on a mystery while I do a few things and a little blue light pops up on Facebook.  A word of encouragement, a laugh, a prayer for me, a prayer request—something.  At least once a week, it happens.

And it always brings a smile to my face.

She encourages me so often—telling me just what I need to hear when I start to doubt myself.

Lucinda Quote

We came up with a cool character a while back.  I can’t tell you much about her because it would be a massive spoiler, but we did decide on one thing.  I’m naming her after this next launch team member. Yep she inspired an exciting new character!

Meet Lucinda (the real one):

Whose Name Inspired an Exciting New Character?

Somewhere on a farm in Indiana, creativity flourishes.  Gardening, photography, and stitchery that is too cool for words form under her “magical” fingers.  I don’t remember when Lucinda first emailed me, but I do know it was early in my writing career—somewhere around June or July of 2012, I suspect.

I asked Lucinda to share what she does in her “spare time” and her answer cracked me up (as she usually does):

Spare time? Currently, my spare time is the result of unseasonably large amounts of rain, spaced exactly wrong to finish spring planting…so spare time is used praying for drying conditions, patience, and keeping the household (read: hubby) calm.”

Now as one who has never been to Indiana, I consider her home fascinating enough, but she had a different opinion.

Lucinda said the coolest place she’s ever been is:

The frozen backwaters of the Mississippi River, where hundreds of Bald Eagles were sitting on the ice, in the trees, EVERYwhere! It was an amazing sight… as we drove past… going 60 MPH… Planning to make that an actual stop when we go visit our Minnesota kids.”

Like every good launch team member, Lucinda likes books—and the first half are favorites of mine as well:

The Blue CastleBesides Chautona Havig, of course….

L.M. Montgomery (Blue Castle!); Gene Stratton Porter (The Harvester and Freckles!); Margaret Mitchell (meh), Dee Henderson (that bank hostage scene in The Negotiator!), Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt, Charlotte Bronte (I hope we still can be friends…)…there’s more, but the first two especially.”

Of course, I had to know why she joined my team when I am no Charlotte or Margaret…. She said:

Other than loving your books? Because I love getting them early, I love sometimes getting to provide feedback on a story line or character, and yes, I love getting them free. I also love being able to expose new readers to a great Havig work!”

And I love that you love it!  Aren’t we loving???

And Lucinda has been around a LONG time.  She read some of the stuff before I shared with advance readers!

She said:

I was blessed enough to be a pre-reader before any official launches started, then have “launched” everything since.”

I totally did NOT call her choice on the book she’s most looking forward to:

The Agency Files. Don’t care whose story, because I want to hear them ALL! (but hey, no pressure…)”

I’ll get right on that, dear.  I’m thinking it’s time for Flynne’s story.

I knew her picking sides would be fun… and check it out!

Alexa or Madeline?

Toughest one…Madeline by a bowler.”

Mac or Luke?

I was wrong, this is tougher…Mac. No, Luke. Um, no. No. Mac, final answer.”

Joe or Keith?

Love Joe, but Keith, all the way.”

Cassie or Kaye?

Cassie, because Kaye makes me feel guilty. And lazy.  (right???)”

Wynnewood or Legends?

Wynnegends (sounds like the British “whinging” Doesn’t it, Barb?). Or Legewood…don’t make me go there!!! Cassie and Keith were pretty easy, but the others were slightly painful…this is my answer to not inflicting any more pain, okay?”

Next up in my Meet the Launch Team Series:

Karin!

The Goodness of Unicorns by Kayla E. Green

One girl determined to heal her sister and another looking for purpose in a nation on the brink of war. And unicorns—with a twist you’ve never seen before. It’s Rowan Tritonia’s sixteenth Naming Anniversary. Her plans for the day never included a headache that causes her to almost faint on a day meant for celebration. When the world comes back into focus, her brown eyes have changed to magenta. But what scares her more is that everything around her is now black and white coupled with a mysterious ability to see the light and shadows in a person’s soul. Then a local cleric implies that Rowan could have the power of Sight, a gift which has only been seen in the stories of unicorns in the Book of Verimor, an ancient text. Rowan is perplexed. Why would Verimor give her something she never asked for instead of answering her greatest prayer to help her younger sister, Blythe? News of the girl with Sight quickly travels beyond Rowan’s local village. When the King of Wisteria learns of her gift from a letter, he summons her to the castle. With growing political tensions from neighboring nations, Rowan may be able to provide the aid they desperately need. Linnea, the king’s sister and his primary advisor, prays that Rowan has truly been blessed by a unicorn and can save the nation and its people from encroaching darkness. Meanwhile, back at home, Blythe, sets out on her own journey. She feels helpless, tied down by the pain that keeps her homebound most of the time. Although she wears a smile to comfort those around her—especially her family—Blythe wonders if her life will ever amount to anything more than fading into the background. Is she truly too broken for any greater purpose, or can Verimor still use her?

Reposted from @catheswanson Charlea Evans thought Reposted from @catheswanson Charlea Evans thought she had finally put her unconventional past behind her.

Now a widow with a college-age daughter and a promising new career within reach, she's worked hard to build a respectable life far removed from Serenity Hill—the quirky former commune where her free-spirited mother still lives. But when a devastating house fire destroys her home and everything she owns, Charlea finds herself with nowhere else to turn.

Reluctantly, she returns to the farm she thought she'd escaped forever, trading independence for her childhood bedroom, milking goats, tending chickens, and counting the days until she can afford a place of her own. Then an accident lands her mother in the hospital, leaving Charlea responsible for managing the property and overseeing an ambitious new venture.
Her mother and daughter have plans of their own. Big plans. Plans to transform Serenity Hill into a seasonal market and destination for workshops, events, and community gatherings. Helping bring the vision to life is Drew Wallace—the man who stole her heart on a single unforgettable date fifteen years ago.

As she works to keep the project moving forward, Charlea finds herself confronting old hurts, long-held assumptions, and the family history she's spent years trying to leave behind. With old dreams awakening and new possibilities taking root, she begins to wonder if Serenity Hill holds the answers she's been searching for. She must decide whether she's willing to risk her heart again—and whether the future she carefully planned can compete with the one God may have been preparing for her all along.

Coming home is the last thing Charlea wants—but it may be the beginning of everything she's been searching for.

Something New is the first book in the Serenity Hill series.
