Using story to connect YOU to the Master Storyteller

D-eleterious

by Chautona Havig · 4 Comments

I can hear you now.  What?  Am I going to corrupt you?  Harm your psyche?  Is this what I think my books are?

No.  How about the word itself?  When was the last time you heard it in common conversation?  When was the last time you read it spoken?  Or, God forbid, have you only heard it spoken by Lina Lamont in Singing in the Rain?

Yeah.  That’s kind of my point.  The English language has so many amazing words, but how many of them do we ever use?  I mean, what was the point in us stealing words from Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, and dozens of other languages if we’re not going to bother using them?

Have you ever signed up for one of those “Word of the Day” email services?  Do you know what makes me really sad about those things?  With the first one I signed up for, maybe once or twice a month did I see a word that isn’t so common to me that I can’t figure out why it made the list.  I finally found one that had less common words, but still it’s rare that I see one I don’t know.  The last dozen I received were

  • farcical  (I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard someone say this.  I see them talk about a farce, but farcical?  Nope.)
  • singular  (really?  Singular is so uncommon that we have to put it on a vocabulary list?)
  • sanguine  (With all the personality tests out there, huh?  Ok…)
  • mendacious  (this was one I’ve never heard spoken.  I’ve only seen this in print.  I won’t be mendacious and pretend I use it daily.  😉
  • salubrious  (Another one that I’ve only seen in print with the exception of an occasional legal commentator or something like that.)
  • pejorative  (really?  REALLY?  With all the legal drama out there???)
  • onerous  (Again, I hear it constantly.  Why is this on the list?)
  • belabor  (Give. Me. A. Break.  I won’t belabor the point.  We need to get back to using the fascinating words we have in our dictionaries!

So, what Word of the Day websites do you like?  Do they come up with cool ones like my friend Darcie’s? She sent me an email a week or two ago to show that they’d actually used oppugn.  OPPUGN!  I’ve only ever heard my father say that word!  How did I never realize it would be spelled like its brother, impugn?  HERE‘s mine.

I don’t subscribe to any word-of-the-day offerings, but I might just have to give it a try, since my vocab is drying up from lack of usage. Love me some thesauri! My favorite word is “veritable”, because it’s just fun to say and most folks don’t know what the heck I’m talking about when I use it. Which, of course, I do!

I have a persnickety personality, what can I say? ;p

A friend of mine commented at church that something was an “asinine idea” and the person she was talking to said, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you swear before!”

      Snort.

Hi there, just making my A-Z rounds! (I’m another fellow writer, btw.)

I think I subscribed to a daily word thing once upon a time, and ended up unsubscribing for the reasons you list above – there wasn’t anything special about the words!

I did go back and read your other A-Z posts and enjoyed them! I’ll be keeping up with you through the challenge 😉

Isn’t it amazing how many “vocabulary builders” are just basic words??? Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to zip over and see what you have to offer.

Episode 566: A Chat with Clint Hall
byChautona Havig

I blame Clint Hall for me singing Roger Millers “Two Worlds Collide” for the last couple of months. No, his sci-fi Worlds Collide has nothing to do with that song, but… I’m DYING to read it. Listen in and see why.

Space wars? Prophecy? EEEP!!!

I found Worlds Collide while writing one of my books and was eager to get a copy of it. Thanks to Clint for the lovely copy sitting on my shelf right next to me. Time to start!

Worlds Collide by Clint Hall

Five worlds at war. Only one can survive. Ten thousand years ago, five cosmic beings—a dragon, a phoenix, a serpent, a lion, and a wolf—set their worlds on an inevitable collision course. Each civilization was given one command: destroy the rival worlds, or crash into them and die. As the planets draw near to each other, the moment of final reckoning is at hand. In a galaxy filled with starfighters and superweapons, magic and manipulation, planet-killing devices and mechanized legions, five heroes must defend their homeworlds against overwhelming odds. But when prophecy and destiny collide, a far greater power begins to stir—one that challenges everything they’ve been told. Oaths will be broken. Chains will be shattered. Champions will rise. The fate of the universe hangs in the balance as these heroes discover whether any world deserves to survive. The War of the Creators has begun. Perfect for fans of Red Rising, The Expanse, and mythic sci-fi epics, Worlds Collide blends high-stakes interplanetary war with a legendary, fate-driven mystery—where the final battle may not be what it seems.

Okay, so maybe her conclusions about how we glorify God might be a bit extreme, but no one can argue that it worked out well for her. Proposing to a guy she's not in love with (yet!)? Not easy, but no one said living to the glory of God would be easy, right?
