Of all the books that would drag me back into Biblical Fiction, one about the cities of refuge in the Old Testament written by Connilyn Cossette seems unlikely. But it was, and now she has a new series that looks into four cousins who run off to fight with King Saul! Um… WHAT? I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to check out this series, starting with Voice of the Ancient. Listen in to learn why!

Will You Forgive Me if I Call This Series One of Biblical Proportions?
Sorry. Couldn’t resist. But seriously, one of the best things about talking to authors like Connilyn Cossette is listening to their deep love for the Word of God and their deep desire to spark something in readers that turns His people (or those seeking Him) to that Word to learn, grow, be encouraged, be convicted, be fed by Him.
Connilyn was no different.
And… she writes my favorite kind of Biblical fiction. She writes about places and people who might have known Biblical characters. Her stories give context and culture to a Biblical world that doesn’t always make sense to us. And she does it while remaining faithful to historical and Biblical truth. Authors who write like this make it easier for readers to separate fiction from straight-up Scripture. It’s harder to get things muddled in your head when it isn’t strictly a retelling. And, the more Biblical fiction like this that I read, the easier it is not to be muddled with stories about well-known Biblical characters.
If you’re new to Connilyn Cossette, she recommends starting with her first book Counted with the Stars because her stories and characters are interwoven, so you’ll get a richer reading experience that way but… Each book also stands on its own.
Voice of the Ancient by Connilyn Cossette
As the eldest son of a Levite and a Philistine, Avidan is torn between his duty to his family legacy and the desire for something more. After an enemy attack strikes close to home, he takes the opportunity to fight with his cousins for the newly crowned King Saul. But when one of the cousins goes missing during the battle, Avidan refuses to leave him behind.
Keziah is the daughter of one of the most powerful clan chiefs in the territory of Manasseh. On the brink of a forced marriage to a loathsome man decades older than her, she has no choice but to run, hoping to find sanctuary with her mother’s family.
United during their journeys and battling to survive the dangers that surround them, Avidan and Keziah make a pact to travel together. As challenges pile up, they must not only rely on each other to stay alive but also learn to trust the true and eternal King of Israel to guide their every step.
