Weddings Can Be Great Fun or Utterly Boring. It’s All about Perspective

I felt sorry for them. My daughters stood at the front of the building in "heels" (for them anyway) and cradling branches (yes BRANCHES) of lilacs in their arms. And the wedding sermon droned on.  For over an hour.  No joke. No exaggeration. Some of the girls shifted. Fidgeted.  I didn't blame Continue Reading

Dead Man's Watch Review

Dead Man’s Watch Did It. It Made Me Believe the Lie.

Strange.  This week I read two books that had watches as a key element of the plot. Of course, the books took place a hundred fifty years apart, and the first book's main character would have been astonished at the concept of a digital watch without moving cogs and such. Still, I found the use of Continue Reading

When Does a Great Idea Override a Mediocre Execution?

Fairy tale retellings are a dime a dozen.  No, really. They are. It's not always deliberate, but a few in particular, occur frequently. Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Princess and the Frog are notable examples. Because of this, sometimes even a mediocre story can come off as amazing Continue Reading

The Lady in Residence Review

This Split-Time Book Has Me Eager to Read More

This split-time novel has the unique distinction of keeping me completely riveted even while I battle lack of sleep.  No, really.  It does.  I don't know if you can get "jet lag" coming home after a short flight from South Carolina to Ontario, California, but if you can, I've got it. After spending Continue Reading

Suzanne Woods Fisher

How Does This Author Keep Writing Such Amazing Books?

Suzanne Woods Fisher first impressed me with her Amish Beginnings series and Nantucket series, but even her Mending Fences and her contemporary series.  But when I read The Moonlight School (and reviewed it HERE), everything shifted. It's not that she's an even more favorite author, it's just Continue Reading

The Best Combo Is a Great Book, a Delicious Cookie, & Sweet Tea

Picture it. My husband at a drive-thru with 9 kids in the van and an order as long as your arm. He begins. "I'd like a Chicken, Bacon, and Swiss, two--" "Would you like that as a combo?" Concentration lost, he blinks at the screen before catching on.  "No, no.  Two, ham and cheese..." As Continue Reading

Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know y Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know yourself the least? We humans are weird that way. Sometimes I think the Lord allows us to be blind to parts of ourselves for a time so as not to drive us too crazy too quickly. Or something.
Characters most like me are hard because they're so very convicting to write AND... because I don't usually know it's me until that conviction its. I tend to have an idealized picture of who I am until reality strips away those rosy glasses and leaves me with crystal-clear vision. Blech.
Second to me... I'd say nasty people. They give me such an ick feeling. Sure, it's cathartic... but it's so hard because I want to redeem everyone, and that's just unrealistic and frankly, arrogant. So... there you have it.
If you have a question you want me to answer, leave it in the comments OR... zip me an email at chautona@chautona.com. I'll try to work them in (and will probably combine those that are really similar.

Clearly, he wasn't talking about me, considering the whole patience being a virtue thing.
