Angela Ruth Strong & I compare and contrast our "husband search" books. Angela's releases today,. You'll want to read it before listening. via @chautonahavig

Angela Ruth Strong, author of mystery, romance, and books studios turn into movies, not to mention writing teacher, has a fabulous book releasing today–Husband Auditions.

As we chatted about it a while back, we realized that our books have commonalities. Both her heroine from Husband Auditions and mine in Blessing Bentley approach marriage sideways with very different personalities and similar ones, too.  In the end, they have different results, but do they?

Listen in to part one!

In an episode full of spoilers, Angela Ruth Strong and I chat about the differences and similarities in our books., our favorite parts of each other’s books, and what key points we saw.

I really can’t share much more than that, #becausespoilers.

What I can tell you is what I LOVED about Husband Auditions. I’m keeping it short and sweet. This book has all the richness of deep women’s fiction but infused into hilarious, page-turning rom-com. 101 ways to catch a husband is hilarious enough, but Angela paired it with an opposites-attract story about a quirky gal and a guy who is waking up after a few years of emotional sleep.  Kind of a reverse Sleeping Beauty. Or something.

Husband Auditions Angela Ruth StrongMore about Angela Ruth Strong’s Husband Auditions.

How far would you go to find the perfect husband? All the way back to the 1950s?

In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young woman on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she’s handed a strange present at the latest wedding–a 1950s magazine article of “ways to get a husband”–she decides there’s nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can’t get any more single, can she?

Her brother’s roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love–Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When Meri Me debuts, it’s an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she’s looking for . . .

With droll comic timing, unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters, Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.

After you read Husband Auditions, and while you wait for Part Two (on Friday!), you can always check out Angela’s WEBSITE and her other books!

Episode 579: A Chat with Lauren Smyth

Not a lot of people write books about the boring Mojave Desert. When they do, I take note. Especially when it’s a super-cool dystopian delight! EEEP!

All That Glows by Lauren Smyth

The apocalypse didn’t take everyone. It just took us. Ever since the rain turned green, Kyrie’s world has been bathed in glowing dust. She packs it into old mascara tubes and sells it as makeup alongside dried cacti, threadbare blankets, and long-expired canned food. There’s not much else to do when everyone outside Kyrie’s small town in the Mojave Desert died from the plague-bearing rain ten years ago. Everyone—except the man in the rubber mask. He’s on the dangerous side of the fence, huffing infected air like it’s nothing, babbling to Kyrie about college and umbrellas and yogurt and everything else that disappeared the day it rained. He doesn’t seem to know that the world ended, and he has no explanation for how he survived the apocalypse. But Kyrie doesn’t believe in ghosts. She can’t trust him, but he’s right about one thing: Towns without secrets aren’t surrounded by chain-link fences. And chain-link fences won’t keep out the plague forever.
