What’s Better Than Ice Cream on a Hot Day? A Great New Book!

by Chautona Havig · Leave a Comment

I have no doubt that Suzanne Woods Fisher's The Sweet Life will be a favorite summer read. Stock up on ice cream, first. via @chautonahavig

Suzanne Woods Fisher is almost synonymous with rich characters, deep faith, and interesting situations, but now with the release of The Sweet Life, I suspect we might see ice cream added to that list. Having an ice cream “expert” who went to ice cream school living in her home doesn’t hurt, but even if she didn’t… a book about a  polar opposite mother and daughter team running an ice cream shop on Cape Cod?  WHAT?  *Insert Patti Page’s “Old Cape Cod” song here… no really… you can listen HERE.

What’s Better Than Ice Cream on a Hot Day? A Great New Book!

Tropes in fiction (whether print or film) are a thing. One of the most popular ones is “opposites attract.”  Suzanne Woods Fisher has taken this and put it into a romantic women’s fiction novel, The Sweet Life. But the opposites are a mother-daughter team who end up in another trope–fish out of water. Because one woman’s impulsive purchase and another woman’s refusal to let her mother fail. #BecauseMom, basically.

When Dawn finds herself taking her mother on what should have been her honeymoon, that’s just the start of a life she had NOT planned.  This Type-A, go-getter, get-the-checkboxes-checked kind of gal shouldn’t be surprised that her free-spirited mother bought an ice cream shop on a whim. Right? But you have to give her credit for making sure Mom doesn’t go belly up when the ice cream season ends and there’s no more income!

This is the first book in the Cape Cod Creamery series, and I cannot wait to find out why Dawn is on this “honeymoon” alone when her ex-fiance isn’t a bad guy.

THAT intrigues me.

Not only that, but what better book to read on a hot summer’s day than a book about ice cream?  My copy of A Sweet Life is here and I’m ready to dive in. Suzanne says her husband’s “obsession” (my word, not hers) with ice cream inspired this book, but not in the way you’d think!  So, you want to be sure to listen in to learn more about that and… about the next release coming soon!

Yep! Suzanne’s next book after The Sweet Life is another Amish release, but you’ll need to listen in (and come back) this fall to find out more about that one.  If you want to check out previous interviews, maybe check out episodes 49 or 106.

Dawn Dixon can hardly believe she’s on a groomless honeymoon on beautiful Cape Cod . . . with her mother. Sure, Marnie Dixon is good company, but Dawn was supposed to be here with Kevin, the love of her life (or so she thought).

Marnie Dixon needs some time away from the absolute realness of life as much as her jilted daughter does, and she’s not about to let her only child suffer alone–even if Marnie herself had been doing precisely that for the past month.

Given the circumstances, maybe it was inevitable that Marnie would do something as rash as buy a run-down ice-cream shop in the town’s tightly regulated historic district. After all, everything’s better with ice cream.

Her exasperated daughter knows that she’s the one who will have to clean up this mess. Even when her mother’s impulsive real estate purchase brings Kevin back into her life, Dawn doesn’t get her hopes up. Everyone knows that broken romances stay broken . . . don’t they?

Welcome to a summer of sweet surprises on Cape Cod–a place where dreams just might come true.

Just a reminder. Megan recommends having both Protector and Proclaimer on hand, because there’s definitely a cliffhanger!

Rebuilder by Megan Schaulis

Bitter and broken from his imprisonment in the Citadel, Hatch can’t stand to watch the woman he loves start her new life. When the king offers him a position as the governor of Evania, an island territory populated by Alphanites, Hatch sees the job as a chance to escape his heartache. But from the moment his crutches hit the sand of this tropical island, Hatch is deemed an outsider, particularly by Myah, an artsy adrenaline junkie the locals have nicknamed “Princess.”

Myah is content to spend her days writing letters to her far-off fiancé. The last thing she needs is a government official taking over Evania and poking at old wounds. But when an enemy attack causes the island to start sinking into the sea, Myah must convince the sullen governor that her home is worth saving.

With only fifty-two days to stabilize the island, Hatch and Myah must confront the pasts they both long to leave behind. As the ground literally sinks beneath them, will they drown in their regrets or ride the waves of change to a future neither could’ve imagined?
