Using story to connect YOU to the Master Storyteller

Lizards in Holland? WHAT?

by Chautona Havig · 13 Comments

I don’t know about you, but as a desert dweller, when I hear “lizard garden” and Amsterdam in the same sentence, it seems a little… incongruous.  So, when author Anne E. Phillips (who happens to be a dear friend of mine) wrote a children’s novel, The Lizard Garden,  that takes place in The Netherlands and involves, among several things, this not-famous-enough-in-my-opinion Lizard Garden, well… I wanted to know more.

Lizard Garden by Anne Siglin

Anne’s book is told from the perspective of twelve-year-old Charlotte.  One of the best things about this book is Anne’s characters.  She writes with a crisp, clean authenticity that makes the story come alive in a fresh, inviting way.  You immediately connect with Charlotte, Milo, and Alice and their family.

The Lizard GardenBut what I love most about this book is how, as an American, I am immersed in Dutch culture in a way I can relate to.  Rather than reading a guidebook to “living in Holland,” I’m living in Holland with another American family.  It’s a learning experience that doesn’t feel like a lesson.

Anne draws you into another world, sets you on an adventure, teaches you things you didn’t know about Dutch culture, art, and travel, and all in a way that makes you feel like you’re experiencing them rather than sitting in a classroom.

It’s hard to write this review–not because I have any criticism that I want to downplay, but rather the opposite.  I have so much I want to say about the book, but in doing so, I’ll spoil it.  And as we all know, River Song would never approve of “Spoilers!”

So, I’ll just say this.

I loved it.  It is a well-written, engaging story that, while written for the youth market, is actually ageless.  Younger children will love to have the book read to them and adults will enjoy it because it is simply a good story.  I’m dying to read her next art-inspired youth novel–rumor has it that it takes place in Italy!

No, I haven’t ever heard of the Lizard Garden and like you I wouldn’t naturally think Holland = lizards. You’ve got me intrigued.

Oh, boy. No way can I not read this book ASAP!

To Fly on Broken Wings by Fayla Ott

Mississippi Delta, 1941

Lila Rose never expected life to offer her more than the quiet rhythm of cotton fields and small-town whispers. Raised in poverty and caring for an alcoholic father, she’s learned not to hope for much.

Then she meets Graham, a young pilot from one of Mississippi’s wealthiest families. Their unlikely love changes everything.

But when war tears them apart and Graham is reported killed in action, Lila believes the future she’d dreamed of has died with him. Determined to move forward, she remarries and begins building a new life.

Until Graham comes home.

Now the man she buried in her heart is standing before her, and the life she’s fought to rebuild hangs in the balance. Faced with an impossible choice between the love she lost and the promises she’s made, Lila must discover whether faith can guide her when every path leads to heartbreak.

To Fly on Broken Wings is a moving Christian historical novel about love, loss, impossible choices, and the quiet courage to trust God when the path ahead is anything but clear.

Can the small town of Berne support two bookstores Can the small town of Berne support two bookstores? Of course, not. Does that stop Anne Montgomery from opening one practically next door to the other one? It does not. Their friendship may be dead, but nothing will stop her from running her dream bookstore. Except it isn't. If something doesn't change, she'll flop faster than this year's over-hyped novel. After much pleading (and some interfering), Milton and his trusty parrotlet, Atticus (not Finch) arrive to help.

A tiny bookstore in an equally tiny town? Sure. Wh A tiny bookstore in an equally tiny town? Sure. Why not. Joshua Hart is determined to make it a success--to share his love of reading with his community. And it will... if the crazy baker (with the amazing cinnamon rolls) across the street will quit blocking his store's existence with her behemoth of a vehicle pointing everyone to those (yes, totally amazing but come on!) cinnamon rolls!
It's a battle royale and a bit of loathe-to-love all rolled into one town fighting to stay alive. Milton and Atticus do their part to reframe his business plan into something that'll work... and yeah. They're doing that matchmaking thing. Can you blame them? With a name like Honey, she's got to be perfect for him.
