When You Can’t Finish a Great Book

by Chautona Havig · 10 Comments

If you love thrillers, seriously... ignore my personal issues and try this book. Then tell me how it ends. I'm dying to know. So disappointed... in me. via @chautonahavig

No Turning Back was great–fabulous, actually. I couldn’t put it down.

Until I had to. The author is a phenomenal writer, and I hope to try something else of hers again in the future.  It’s a personal issue that I just can’t handle.  So I closed the book and chose to withdraw from the tour.  I’m very sorry for that. I’d love to know how it turns out, but I can’t read it.

For those who love realistic fiction that, while authentic-feeling, is relatively clean, give this book a shot.  For those who have problems with assault scenes involving women… beware.  I’m not sorry I requested a free review copy of this book, and I’m thankful the author provided it. I wish I could have finished the whole thing.

That’s what I wrote the day I was supposed to leave a review but…

No Turning Back Review

When You Can’t Finish a Great Book

You let the tour company know.  They let the author know, and authors like Katie Vorreiter send you a nice email assuring you that they understand.

And guess what?  She showed me where I could skip and keep reading.

So glad I did. Katie Vorreiter has written a fabulous book in No Turning Back–great suspense, excellent characterization, and an ending that one doesn’t see every day.

Recommended for those who love strong, intense suspense with a bit of a thriller vibe.  However, if the threat of rape is a problem for you, be aware it exists. You aren’t dragged into it, but you know it’s been a thing before and might be again.

No Turning Back sounds like no other story I’ve ever read. When you can’t trust people you can always trust God.

Hi Chautona, thank you so much for your honesty about your response to my book! And for your kind words about the writing before you set it down. It didn’t occur to me to put a trigger warning out there for potential bloggers on the tour—I’m leaning about these things. I hope it didn’t trigger anything lasting or painful for you.

The premise & setting are definitely not for everyone! I have good friends who haven’t read it because it seemed too intense. I totally get that.

I tried to build tension & infuse reality by alluding to things that could happen to Livvy in that environment, without putting it too baldly. But I think I know what scene you mean.

Anyway, blessings on you & your work. Thanks again for your transparency. If you want to know how it ends, feel free to email me! Or leave me a comment on katievorreiter.com.

    Best,
    Katie Vorreiter

This book’s premise is uncomfortable for many, even me, a retired minister. However, I am intrigued and curious for other responses on the tour

Spoiler alert: This series is definitely on my FAVORITE series this year list. You don’t want to miss it!

The Escape Game by Gina Holder

Twenty years ago, the world’s leading enigmatologist disappeared, leaving behind a cipher no one could solve… not without his journal. Puzzle shop owner Demi Kayne has spent twenty years hoping her father would return home. When she discovers his hidden journal tucked inside the walls of her family home, she finally uncovers the clue she’s been waiting for—but it leads somewhere far more dangerous than she imagined. Liam Shepherd, a missionary and escape-room enthusiast, is searching for answers of his own. His sister has vanished without a trace, and the trail of clues leads him straight to Demi—and the secrets hidden in her father’s journal. Their search brings them to the eerie Ives Mansion, where its brilliant and reclusive owner has designed a deadly challenge. Once inside, Demi and Liam realize they’re no longer guests. They’re players. Trapped inside a twisted real-life mystery game based on a stolen puzzle design, they must solve a series of lethal riddles before time runs out. Each puzzle brings them closer to the truth about Demi’s missing father and Liam’s sister—but also closer to a killer who has spent years perfecting a game no one survives. With the clock ticking and lives hanging in the balance, Demi and Liam must confront their fears, their pasts, and the faith that may be their only hope of escape. In this gripping Christian suspense novel, every clue matters—and every mistake could be fatal. Can Demi and Liam solve the final puzzle before the game ends…or will the escape room become their tomb? Perfect for fans of Lynette Eason, Dani Pettrey, and Irene Hannon who enjoy puzzle-driven Christian suspense filled with danger, secrets, and faith under fire.

Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know y Ever notice how you best know yourself--and know yourself the least? We humans are weird that way. Sometimes I think the Lord allows us to be blind to parts of ourselves for a time so as not to drive us too crazy too quickly. Or something.
Characters most like me are hard because they're so very convicting to write AND... because I don't usually know it's me until that conviction its. I tend to have an idealized picture of who I am until reality strips away those rosy glasses and leaves me with crystal-clear vision. Blech.
Second to me... I'd say nasty people. They give me such an ick feeling. Sure, it's cathartic... but it's so hard because I want to redeem everyone, and that's just unrealistic and frankly, arrogant. So... there you have it.
If you have a question you want me to answer, leave it in the comments OR... zip me an email at chautona@chautona.com. I'll try to work them in (and will probably combine those that are really similar.
