Using story to connect YOU to the Master Storyteller

When Truth Is So Crazy No One Would Ever Believe It

by Chautona Havig · Leave a Comment

Rebecca Duvall Scott & her Dignity series will keep you riveted, especially when you learn how much of her tale actually happened! via @chautonahavig

Author of When Dignity Came to Harlan, Rebecca Duvall Scott tells the true family story of sisters separated from each other and sent to live with strangers.  What happens next is both heartbreaking and inspiring, and the continuing story in her recent release Teaching Dignity leads into a tale that is so unbelievable that…

I actually had to have another friend join us because two “too crazy to be believed” family stories are so similar we just had to compare them.

When Truth Is So Crazy No One Would Ever Believe It

This has to be one of the most unexpected and cool episodes ever. After botching the intro so many times that I couldn’t stop laughing (got Rebecca’s name wrong, her book title wrong, you name it),  she told me her great grandmother’s story, and guys… wow.

Look, I started reading When Dignity Came to Harlan before the interview, but after chatting with her about it, and after learning the hardcover was on sale (it’s only 8.97  as I’m typing this on 9/17/21), I had to go buy one.  I just didn’t manage to get the paperback I’d already put in my cart removed. More on that in a bit.

Rebecca tells about how she’d planned for two books, but readers wanted more, so she now has three planned, and the first two are available–When Dignity came to Harlan and Teaching Dignity. The third book tells the story of her grandmother’s “romance” and oh my word.  As she told the real story, my eyes bugged out (bet she’s glad she couldn’t see).

Why?

Because I’d heard that story before. Almost the exact same one. Different states, slightly different details, same main story.  WHAT?  It’s hard enough to believe it happened once, but twice?  And in the same general area of the country?  You’ve got to listen to this!

This episode was supposed to come out two weeks ago, but thanks to internet troubles and fires, I wasn’t able to do it, so now you don’t even have to wait for Teaching Dignity.

Teaching Dignity Rebecca Duvall ScottTeaching Dignity by Rebecca Duvall Scott.

From best-selling and award-winning author, Rebecca Duvall Scott, comes the sequel to the Christian historical fiction novel, When Dignity Came to Harlan.

“Rebecca Duvall Scott proves, once again, that she is a masterful storyteller, creating a cast of loveable characters thrust into a world that is both peaceful and perilous, tender and troubling. Fans of When Dignity Came to Harlan will delight in this sweet, touching story of love, hope, redemption, and faith. If you’re looking for a gentle story that warms your heart and touches your soul, look no further than Teaching Dignity.” – Lori Nelson Spielman, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany

“Teaching Dignity evokes every human emotion. The history is rich, the hardships are difficult to bear, and the grit displayed time after time brings vice and virtue sharply into focus. Touching the depths of the reader’s spirit, this story will leave a lasting impression.” – Mary Jo Thayer, author of Close to the Soul, an Amazon #1 Hot New Release in Religious Fiction

As a first-year teacher fresh out of college, Miss Anna Beth Atwood is struggling to find her own path both inside and outside the one-room schoolhouse.

The trials of the Great Depression, racial segregation, social class division, and domestic violence don’t make her job any easier, but the real challenge will be confronting – and overcoming – her traumatic past once and for all.

Heartfelt, emotional, and painfully honest, the story of Teaching Dignity is a shining light in the darkest times. Written by award-winning author of When Dignity Came to Harlan, Anna Beth’s journey into adulthood reminds readers of the important adage “To thine own self be true,” but more importantly… where could we go but to the Lord?

Walk in Anna Beth’s shoes and see firsthand how the rekindling of one woman’s faith has the power to not only help her students and community but herself as well.

Episode 572: A Chat with Kari Trumbo
byChautona Havig

Mystery is my absolute favorite genre, so when I heard that Kari Trumbo had taken her Wayside Ranch and spun it off into a mystery series, you know I was excited. Kari? Plus mystery? Listen in and hear why Beneath Still Waters is next on my “must read” list!

note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.

Okay… mystery that isn’t focused on romance? That’s like this book was tailor-made for me! EEEP!

I love what Kari is doing with this series and now this spin-off. This is gonna be great!

Beneath Still Waters by Kari Trumbo

Fresh out of training and still haunted by a near-fatal shootout, Ferd Kincade retreats to Wayside Ranch to heal.

She expects quiet. Instead, she finds a body. When she discovers a mysterious boat washed ashore on a nearby lake, nothing about the scene makes sense and Ferd can’t walk away. Pulling Piper’s Ridge detective Duke Campose into the investigation, she soon uncovers signs of something far more dangerous than a simple murder.

Someone is hiding a deadly secret.

And they’re willing to kill again to keep it buried.

As the truth points to a ruthless drug operation, Ferd becomes the next target. Now, she’ll need every ounce of her training, and a lot of faith, to survive long enough to bring a killer to justice.

Don’t miss the giveaway that ends September 7th. Books will be shipped to US addresses, but feel free to enter from anywhere and have the book sent to a friend! No purchase necessary! Just click HERE to enter.

Judah Hensley knows three underacknowledged things Judah Hensley knows three underacknowledged things. 1. Alpacas are gross. 2. Family is complicated. 3. Faith is even worse. He might have to spend his summer hawking devotionals and enduring yet another, "Have a blessed day," but he'll survive by driving his coworker crazy and trying not to annoy his parents. Much.
Panda Marie knew working with Judah would be awful, but finding out he's lost his faith? Now what?
One old bookstore, one new location, one last summer to survive and then they all get a new start on life. Question is, will it really be better?

Nothing says true love like a mutual admiration of Nothing says true love like a mutual admiration of books, right? Nine authors, nine stories, more matches than we may ever know. My contribution to the anthology is Turnabout Is Fair Match. One good thing came out of the trauma in Dying to Read: Olemann's Books now has a reputation for having "matchmaking" book clubs. And that's something Imogen Stokes is very interested in--not for herself, of course. She has a grandson to match up, and Olemann's is the place to get it done.

Can the small town of Berne support two bookstores Can the small town of Berne support two bookstores? Of course, not. Does that stop Anne Montgomery from opening one practically next door to the other one? It does not. Their friendship may be dead, but nothing will stop her from running her dream bookstore. And... she got the prime location. It's perfect!
Except it isn't. If something doesn't change, she'll flop faster than this year's over-hyped novel. After much pleading (and some interfering), Milton and his trusty parrotlet, Atticus (not Finch) arrive to help.
Book two in the Bookstrings series (aside from the two prequel novellas), Clock Tower Bound is available in print, on Kindle (and Kindle Unlimited), and coming soon to audiobook (and @ChristaDelSorbo's) YouTube Channel (where you can listen free!).
